Fighting Shadows (On the Ropes #2) by Aly Martinez

Goodreads review

I come from a family of fighters. I always thought I’d follow in their shadows, becoming unstoppable in the ring. That changed the day I saved the life of a woman I loved, but could never have.

My brother hailed me as a hero, and my reward was a wheelchair.

Paralyzed, my life became an inescapable nightmare.

Until I met her.

Ash Mabie had a heart-stopping smile and a laugh that numbed the rage and resentment brewing inside of me. She showed me that even the darkest night still had stars, and it didn’t matter one bit that you had to lie in the weeds to see them.

I was a jaded asshole who fell for a girl with a knack for running away. I couldn’t even walk but I would have spent a lifetime chasing her.

Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting the shadows of our past.
Fighting to reclaim my future.

Fighting for her.

I couldn’t get into the wrecked and ruined series by Aly Martinez but I love this series. Odd sometimes how you can like one thing but not another. I also thought that Ms. Martinez couldn’t do better than “Fighting Silence” bloody glad I am wrong. Unfortunately time flies when you read a good book. 5 learning to trust stars.

Opening line:

In exchange for a permanent place to live…in. A. Homeless. Shelter. I looked away, because it was the truth. A truth I hated.

Three. Fucking. Years, Ash. You took something that belonged to me. And I want her back.
My breath hitched. I waited three years to hear those words. If only I could trust them.

3 years earlier

How I wanted to dislike Flint and I tried so hard I really did but I couldn’t. I adored him. Although he was grumpy and an arse. It didn’t matter. So I mentioned that he was an arse right? Now, why Flint would you do that?

He is bitter, cynical and taking a path that will lead to self-destruction because Clay Page was the reason he was recovering from a bullet in the back. He caught a bullet to save Eliza. Flint has been in love with Eliza ever since he was twelve. He declares his love when he is in a state of oblivion in the hospital and every day he watches the woman he loves with his brother. He moves out as he can’t take the pain any longer.

Problems don’t disappear, words of wisdom from Slate

“Problems don’t need a map. They’ll follow you everywhere. You can’t hide forever Flint.”

Ash Mabie was dealt a pretty shit hand in life. Her father brought her up to be a con artist, a pick pocket and a thief. They have moved around so much that she has never experienced normal. But she has seen the positive in it all.
God, I would have killed to go to an actual school, with actual kids my age. I’d heard that teenage girls were bitches, but I was willing to take the chance. They couldn’t be all that bad. I was pretty freaking awesome. Surely there were others like me.

But she has stayed true to herself and has a quirky, fun and positive outlook on life. She has a heart of gold. But she is evasive and telling the truth. Ash is quirky, goofy, insane and a riot. Flint does things he usually wouldn’t do. He finally finds his smile around Ash again. He begins to feel and isn’t numb.
“I’d known Ash Mabie for exactly two hours, but I was stunned into silence by the vulnerability on her creamy white face. It shouldn’t haven’t been there. Mainly because it ruined any other smile that would be there.

So I was wondering how Ash and Flint were going to meet, initially through Quarry because his piece of a shit Mum suddenly wanted him back. Bitch. She was married to Ash’s father.

Ash literally barges into Flint’s life. There is something about him that appeals to her. Especially as she went to meet her homeless friends Max and Donna. Even in a wheelchair he tries to save her. He is so caught up in the shadows that he forgets the who casts it.

I love how the author gives the H/h something special in the book something just for them. In the first book it was a window that they shared but in this book it was a patch of weeds that became their space. Flint’s gesture of transporting the weeds was so sweet. Ms. Martinez makes me feel what the characters are feeling. And makes me like them although I don’t want to.

Tell the girl that you building something that breaks her heart. Cruel, really cruel. Although they continue it all comes to a grinding halt and explodes in their faces. Flint finds out that Ash is sixteen and flips. He is really judgmental.

Sixteen year olds belong with their parents. Giggle in homeroom and trying to score with the high school quarterback. Sheesh what school did he go to?

Can you fall in love in a month? Why, yes I think you really can. Ash wants to fight for them
“Because I’d give anything to be tied down to you. Wheelchair or not. Walking or not. Just You.

What does the douchecanoe, He gets insulting. Git.

Flint with the help of Till starts looking for her. He is devastated at the mistake that he made.
I unconsciously search for her face. Every blonde I passed and every laugh I heard was always her. It was never her.”

They get it together with ups and downs.

The ending with Quarry broke my fucking heart.
